Phytotherapy & Aromatherapy
Phytotherapy
Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts from natural origin as
medicines of health-promoting agents. Even though phytotherapy is usually
regarded as "alternative medicine" in the Western countries, it
is as well, when critically carried out, an essential part of modern pharmacognosy.
Pharmacognosy" derives from two Greek words, "pharmakon" or drug, and "gnosis" or knowledge. Like many contemporary fields of science, Pharmacognosy has undergone significant change in recent years and today represents a highly interdisciplinary science which is one of five major areas of pharmaceutical education.
Its scope includes the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances, or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources. Research problems in pharmacognosy include studies in the areas of phytochemistry, microbial chemistry, biosynthesis, biotransformation, chemotaxonomy, and other biological and chemical sciences.
Pharmacognosy is one of the five major divisions of the pharmaceutical curriculum, represents the oldest branch of the profession of pharmacy. The ancients gathered herbs, animals, plants, and minerals and concocted them into ill-flavored pungent mixtures. Innumerable remedies were known to the early practitioners of pharmacy and medicine, a fact indicated by the writings of Theophrastus, Pliny, Dioscorides, and their contemporaries. Thousands of plant and animal products used for the treatment of ills were described by Dioscorides in his book "DC Materia Medica." Of these a surprisingly large number are still of importance in modern therapeutic practice: Aspidium, Cinnamon, Ergot, Ilyoscyamus, and Opium were used in much the same manner as today.

and result. The body is prepared by gentle exfoliation with an aromatic

stimulating layer and prepare it for the phytothermal gel which stimulates
circulation and lymphatic flow for detoxing purposes, it is followed by
a relaxing compression wrap for 20 minutes, then an essential oil assists

The Benefit of an Aroma ~ Inhaling Essential Oils
Essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs offer both psychological
and physical benefits. Not only does the aroma of the natural essential
oil stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction, but when inhaled into the
lungs, the natural constituents (naturally occurring chemicals) can supply
therapeutic benefit. Diffusing eucalyptus essential oil to help ease congestion
is a prominent example.
The Benefit of Physical Application
Essential oils that are applied to the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
The constituents of essential oils can aid in health, beauty and hygiene
conditions.
Other Benefits
In addition to therapeutic benefit at the emotional and physical level,
essential oils are helpful in other applications. Essential oils can be
used in household and laundry cleaners. Some oils act as a natural insect
repellent and pesticide. You may recall using citronella candles during
the summer to keep mosquitoes away. Citronella essential oil is the ingredient
in the candles that is responsible for repelling the mosquitos.
Essential Oil Blends
Essential oils can be blended together to create appealing and complex aromas.
Essential oils can also be blended for a specific therapeutic application.
Essential oils that are carefully blended with a specific therapeutic purpose
in mind may be referred to as an essential oil syngery. A synergistic essential
oil blend is considered to be greater in total action than each oil working
independently.
